It's 2011. So Now What?

Well, right from the start it sounds like I have an attitude problem, doesn't it? But of course you know better because I am the attitude expert and I would never stoop so low as to have a bad attitude in public. Oh sure if you threatened to torture my family or friends they might give up a juicy tidbit about me having a bad attitude, but I swear it was fleeting. And I always, really always, pull myself out of it and learn something from the error of my ways.

I probably should add here that I realize it is February and it clearly says January at the top of this newsletter. It is not a mistake. If you were to subtract all the snowed in 'how can I work with all these people around' days I've had in January it would clearly be January 20th at the latest. Chalk that up as a hazard of working in a home office; it can so easily become Grand Central Station. Factor in the workers sanding and redoing floors in another part of the house and you would realize that I am truly a model of productivity if I accomplished anything at all!

So now what? Frequently we are told the start of a new calendar year is a time of reflection and starting anew. It certainly can be and often is the catalyst that spurs us on to new heights of success; however that is measured. At the same time many of us attack the New Year with such energy and zeal it would be impossible to maintain it for twelve months, let alone the month of January. That's where the 'so now what?' comes in. I am very goal oriented but would never leave you pumped up without tucking some survival techniques and maybe a tissue or two in your pocket just in case of an emergency. Here are surefire ways to stay fired up despite obstacles along the way.

So Now What?

6 Ways to Handle Setbacks

  1. See Your Way Out I am a visual person and need to see a list, picture or representation of what I am working toward to stay on track. Experts now confirm that such a practice can actually speed up the process of turning your visual into reality. Creative visualization and mental practice are a powerful combination so use it!
  2. Internal vs. External: Be more concerned with internal improvement rather than external. Not all progress is readily apparent to the outside world. Creative thought, intuition, character development and personal revelations aren't easily perceptible to others. And really, who cares? If you want what you want for the right reasons you won't be deterred by every little external perception.
  3. Prepare to Persevere: Be prepared for setbacks and situational changes so you're not thrown off your game. Preparation is not the same as expectation so it shouldn't interfere with your creative visualization techniques. Understanding you might have to do the work and suffer some setbacks before flying high isn't negative, just realistic.
  4. Do what you can when you can: Sometimes the timing is off, sometimes people don't cooperate, and sometimes you don't feel very creative; that's the time to do what you can instead of blaming, whining and doing nothing. Doing what you can, no matter what, keeps you in a proactive position rather than one of being acted upon.
  5. Personal responsibility: Take responsibility for your choices when things don't go your way, then let it go. Dwelling on what happened or what could have happened brings negative energy into play and you risk losing sight of what you're working toward (See #1). Do your research and make wise decisions based on all forces involved.
  6. Say No to Negative: Monitor your negative self talk, avoid naysayers and run away from energy drainers. Attitude is a choice and taking control of your own involves desire, practice, courage to feel uncomfortable until you get it right and focusing on the moment rather than replaying mistakes of the past or perceived problems in the future. Whew! Just reading over what I wrote makes me feel energized, empowered and ready to tackle the world again. Now if we just don't have anymore snow days . . .!
