FULL PLATE NO FORK UPDATE

The wait is over; it is hot off the presses and ready to read. Each chapter was inspired by my own life experiences creating a book with truth, wisdom, and personal stories everyone can relate to, laugh with, and learn from. Full Plate No Fork would be honored to be dog-eared, full of sticky notes, beat up from being carried in your briefcase, purse, gym bag, diaper bag, or backpack, and yes, even left in the bathroom magazine rack to share with others!

For more information and to purchase copies go to, www.DarlaArni.com and click on Darla's Store. I must admit it is a great gift for teachers, friends, & family members, and will fit nicely in a Christmas Stocking!

5 WAYS TO FIGHT FEAR

Just because this newsletter is arriving the day before Halloween don't assume my topic relates to goblins, ghosts, neighborhood pranksters or a reality show that makes you eat strange foods. Not even close, although I did think the timing seemed right to address our personal fears that keep us from being, doing, and succeeding.

So what do we fear? According to some experts and even a Gallup poll, from worst to least, adults are most afraid of: snakes, public speaking, heights, being closed in a small space, spiders and insects, needles and getting shots, mice, flying on an airplane, dogs, thunder and lightening, crowds, going to the doctor, and the dark. I have to admit there are several items on the list I'd rather not deal with and, let's just say, I can truly understand why snakes beat out public speaking! However, most of these top fears have to do with outward situations that we could quite easily avoid or perhaps endure for a short period of time.

I believe our real fears are more intriguing.

The biggest fears are those conjured up in our mind. Physical catastrophes and natural disasters pale in comparison to the fears that keep us from experiencing life and exploring opportunities that come our way. In short, fear can keep you stuck! Common fears that keep us stuck are fear of; change, being alone, making decisions, making a mistake, disapproval, rejection, ending a relationship, financial loss, rejection, and of course, fear of failure.

In our quest to minimize our fears the media is not our friend. We have evolved into a society that is linked, wired, booted up, rss'd, and logged into twenty four hour news updates from a media that seems to be continually playing the role of Chicken Little. For a perfect example go to wired.com and take the quiz, www.wired.com/culture/culturereviews/magazine/16-07/pl_print"What should you really fear?"

Since we all have fears and would really rather not live this way forever, I have devised a short list of 5 Ways to Fight Fear. Read it, do what is says, start today!

5 Ways to Fight Fear

  1. Face Off Fear only has power when you allow it to immobilize your life. You must face your fear to conquer it. In the words of Susan Jeffers, author of a book of the same name, "Feel the fear and do it anyway." Don't wait for the fear to go away, do what you want to do despite the feelings of fear.
  2. Examine It You are not the sum of your thoughts. What you think is your perception and it is not always accurate. Examine the thoughts you feed your brain rather than letting them control you. By discounting their validity you steal their power.
  3. Say No to Ego Keep your ego under control and free yourself from unnecessary pain. You can tell your ego is in control because you find your thoughts becoming judgmental and full of comparisons. Degrading others does not make you better; it only means you're insecure. A life of who's better, stronger, faster, smarter, or who has the biggest house, better job, largest bank account, best car, or cutest kids is shallow and should be avoided by rising above.
  4. Act Now! Take action instead of pondering all the "what ifs" swirling around in your head. The reality is 80-90 percent of what we worry about never happens. The fact is whatever happens as an outcome of taking action will be much better than the anxiety wrought imaginings of your mind.
  5. Resist It As you grow through fear be prepared for resistance not only from your inner worry wart but from those around you. Your positive changes can create fear for those close to you including family members, co-workers, and best friends. If you are prepared for their reaction ahead of time you be less likely to succumb to the temptation of giving up your dreams to waylay the fears of others.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

MENSA MOMENT

My ID number is quite remarkable. It's a nine-digit number with each of the digits from 1 to 9 appearing once. The whole number is divisible by 9. If you remove the rightmost digit, the remaining eight-digit number is divisible by 8. Removing the next rightmost digit leaves a seven-digit number that is divisible by 7. This property continues all the way down to one digit. What is my ID number?

E-mail your answer to Darla. The first 15 correct answers will be entered in our prize drawing. The prize for this drawing will be a signed copy of my new book Full Plate No Fork. Good luck!

The answer to the last Mensa Moment was:  30 mph.

Congratulations to our winner Jerry Lee! Please email me your address I will send your prize ASAP.
